Feeling Torn

Today I am going to ramble, I think. I work part-time at a hospital in the registrar department, and I’ve starting doing overnight shifts. It works well with my family’s schedule since I have a six year-old, and my husband works full-time, but I am TIRED! (more…)

Tax Time

Filed under: business — jen @ 1:19 pm

The two things sure to happen at some time in your life are death and taxes. We can discuss the former at dollars-and-cents.jpganother time, but taxes are around the corner. I’ve finished mine this morning, and it was a headache as usual.

I have noticed a lot of artists just operate under the table, selling things here and there, buying supplies out of their regular checking account, or on credit cards. But it can be to your great advantage to go get yourself a DBA (doing business as), and get a state tax ID#. You can claim your losses as a deduction on your taxes; you can even claim your studio space within your home. You can use your tax ID# to buy any supplies tax-free that you plan to use as a part of your artwork to be sold. It also forces you to see your money spent vs. money earned.

Jealousy

I want to pass along tidbits of info I come across as a part of the life of this blog. Today’s excerpts come from a book titled “The Heart of the Artist” by Rory Noland, which really deals specifically with the arts and spirituality. Nonetheless, even if you don’t consider yourself particularly spiritual or religious, there are some really good points to consider as an artist. (more…)

Out of Sync

Filed under: contemplations — jen @ 1:13 pm

I’ve had to be out of town for a few days for a family emergency with limited internet access at best. It’s been a bit odd, sleeping in a different hotel each night, living out of our suitcases, spending time at the hospital, and mostly waiting. I feel completely out of sync. (more…)

Mouths of Babes

Filed under: family, contemplations — jen @ 12:13 am

It’s so funny how kids follow our examples so easily. My daughter knows I make and sell art as a part of my life, and has therefore decided she will pursue that as one of her careers. It’s only one of many; because when she is an adult she plans to pursue different careers on different days of the week, such as archeologist, ballet dancer, astronaut, artist, and cowgirl. She’s rather ambitious! (more…)

Reproducing Your Work

Filed under: getting started, presentation, prints — jen @ 11:00 pm

When I began to get my feet wet selling my work, I noticed that a bunch of my artist friends were getting reproductions of their work done, and selling prints. I thought this to be a great idea! After all, I would have copies of art that I had sold, and for those who couldn’t afford an original, they could buy a print.

Everyone seems to go about this process differently though, (more…)

Honestly!

Filed under: inspiration, growth — jen @ 3:46 pm

Critiques can be a valuable tool in your maturation process as an artist. That doesn’t make it easy, though. Someone picking apart your efforts feels like someone picking on your child. It just seems unfair! (more…)
